"inadequate" - beauty standards in relation to young adolescent women

Everything seen within my series of compositions is intentional and tells a story of a girl getting ready to go out. Sometimes when we compare ourselves to celebrities and models, we belittle ourselves and find ourselves unattractive, desperately trying to get on their level through the “magical” fix of makeup. I wanted this piece of artwork to connote a deeper meaning to viewers, suggesting that we are not alone. Using the emotions of what it is like for a girl to get ready in this society can be very self-deprecating, due to the mass exposure of edited models and stars acting as the blueprint for how we should look. I decided to purchase a vogue magazine for the shoot because I thought that specific magazine would further enhance my message due to the preexisting connotations surrounding vogue and the recognizability factor. In terms of colour, I was heavily influenced by the show Euphoria and the early 2000s popular culture style, trying to make these photos appear as freeze frames from a 2000s film.
